Hemp Oil Giving Iowa Woman Her Life Back

FONDA, Iowa — Debilitating seizures stole her ability to walk and communicate and left a 25-year-old Fonda woman trapped in her own body.

Harli Kirkpatrick’s family did everything they could to help, but the varieties of prescriptions were only outnumbered by the repeated doctor’s visits.

Their frustration led them to an unconventional option, with unexpected results.

“What’s meaningful to Harli is that she has control of her life and that means having control of her body,” says Tami Mugler of Fonda.

Like all mothers Mugler had big dreams for her daughter, that all changed when Harli Kirkpatrick was just one-year-old.

“There are several genotypes Harli is deletion. The deletion genotype is the most common for Angelman’s Syndrome but also the most severe,” says Mugler.

Angelman’s Syndrome limits speech, delays physical development and causes debilitating seizures.

Rowlett girl needing cannabis oil leaving Texas

ROWLETT — Alexis Bortell is the unlikely face of a controversial issue.

"Medical cannabis will help me," said the nine-year-old girl. "It's illegal in Texas, and we're trying to change that."

Her story has attracted attention across Texas. Two Republican lawmakers recently introduced legislation to legalize medical marijuana — not the kind you smoke, but rather cannabis oil.

"It will help reduce my seizures," Alexis explained.

They strike about twice a week. Her seizures aren't violent, but are still serious, and made more so because drugs won't help.

Pediatric Academy Now Says Medical Marijuana May Help Some Ill Kids

rijuana use should be decriminalized and federal officials should reclassify cannabis as a less dangerous drug to spur vital medical research, the leading group of U.S. pediatricians recommended Monday.

In an update to its 2004 policy statement on pot, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) also recognized marijuana may be a treatment option for kids "with life-limiting or severely debilitating conditions for whom current therapies are inadequate."

That new stance is welcome news to some 200 families with ill children who recently moved to Colorado — where marijuana is legal for adults — in searches for last-ditch cures. Those remedies include the pot strain called Charlotte's Web, which anecdotally has been shown to control seizures in some kids.

"We don't want to marginalize families who feel like this is the only option for their child because of crisis," said Dr. Sharon Levy, chair of AAP's committee on substance abuse and assistant professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She was one of the statement's co-authors.

Media accounts of medical-marijuana refugees in Colorado have given doctors "reason to suspect" that cannabinoids — the chemical compounds secreted by cannabis flowers — might have anticonvulsant properties, Levy said.

Charlotte's Web, for example, is selectively bred to contain low levels of the cannabinoid THC, which causes people to feel high, but elevated levels of cannabidiol, or CBD, which does not have psychoactive effects. In one medical trial, CBD was shown to be possibly effective in treating people with Parkinson's disease, though more study is needed, scientists have said.

"We understand why a desperate parent might say, 'Look it's going to take 10 years to do this research.' We think that kind of compassionate use should be limited to children who are truly debilitated or at the end of life," Levy said in an interview with NBC News. Asked to list those debilitating illnesses, Levy cited severe seizure disorders.

Scientists find promise in purified marijuana molecule for pediatric epilepsy treatment

Six-year-old Izaiah Ruiz has countless seizures a day due to a rare form of pediatric epilepsy. Now, a marijuana-derived drug may help him— and his family— avoid the debilitating attacks.

Izaiah had his first seizure when he was just 2 months old and was diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, a condition that begins in infancy, five months later. The disease, also called Severe Myoclonic Epilepsy of Infancy (SMEI), is intractable, meaning it does not respond to any currently available treatment. While 60 percent of epilepsy cases do respond, 40 percent, including those linked to Dravet syndrome, do not.

When Izaiah has a tonic clonic seizure— the type with muscle spasms that most people think of when they hear the word “seizure”— his grandmother, Lori Fountain, follows a military-like procedure to calm and monitor him.

“Immediately, it’s getting on the floor and laying him down on his side,” Fountain, of Conroe, Tex., told FoxNews.com. “I grab the oxygen and put the oxygen on him. I want the airflow to keep going to the brain and other parts— because when you have a seizure, everything shuts down in your body. You also quit breathing.”

“I grab my phone and I look at the time, and I keep up with the time and I watch him,” Fountain continued, rattling off the directions from a well-rehearsed memory. “Then he will go into the shaking part, and I watch and put the (heart) monitor on him.”

When the seizures last longer than four minutes, Fountain administers Diastat, a rectal medication for cluster seizures. She has the paramedics, who’ve known Izaiah since he was a baby, on speed dial.

Dravet syndrome and Epidiolex

“Most children with Dravet syndrome are having hundreds of seizures a day,” Angus Wilfong, a pediatric neurologist at Texas Children’s Hospital, told FoxNews.com. “Some are subject to status epilepticus, and that’s a life-threatening condition.”

Wilfong is the principal investigator for the trial of a new drug that may help treat Dravet syndrome, which is genetic and currently has no cure. The treatment, called Epidiolex, has transformed the lives of patients with Dravet syndrome without eliciting unusual side effects, Wilfong said.

Izaiah was part of the double-blind dosage-range trial, and for the month of December his grandmother administered the oral liquid, which was created by GW Pharmaceuticals, to him twice a day. Epidiolex reduced his tonic clonic seizures from about four a month to only two, said Fountain, who noted that he still had small seizures daily.

For only the third time in his life, Izaiah was able to spend Christmas at home and not at the hospital.
